Renting

The average monthly private rent in the UK, from 2005 to today. In 2005 the average stood at around £750. It now exceeds £1,383. That rise was gradual for over a decade, then accelerated sharply from 2021 onwards as demand outstripped supply, mortgage holders converted homes to rentals and the cost of living pressures pushed more people into the private rented sector. Measured by the ONS Price Index of Private Rents; figures before 2015 use the ONS England chain-linked back-series.
