Total Population
The total number of people usually resident in the United Kingdom, estimated by the Office for National Statistics, the ONS, each mid-year. It rises through births and immigration, and falls through deaths and emigration. A larger population widens the workforce and tax base but also the demand for housing, healthcare and schools; a smaller one does the reverse.
